What is title 42 expiration?

Title 42 is a public health measure implemented in the United States in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It allows the government to quickly expel individuals, including asylum seekers and unaccompanied minors, who may pose a risk of spreading the virus across the border.

The measure was implemented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under the authority of the Public Health Service Act. It has been controversial because it bypasses the normal immigration and asylum procedures, and there have been concerns about the treatment of individuals who have been expelled under Title 42.

As of May 2023, Title 42 is still in effect. However, there have been calls to lift the policy from advocates and some politicians who have criticized its use as inhumane and not aligned with American values. The expiration of Title 42 would require the CDC to rescind or revise the order that authorized it.
