Moderna, Pfizer Vaccines Face New Patent Challenge

Moderna and Pfizer have been hit with new patent lawsuits over their COVID-19 vaccines. The lawsuits were filed by Promosome LLC, a biotech company that claims the vaccines infringe its patents related to messenger RNA (mRNA) technology.

Promosome's patents cover the use of mRNA to deliver genetic material into cells. The company claims that Moderna and Pfizer's vaccines use its technology without permission.

The lawsuits were filed in federal court in San Diego, California. Promosome is seeking damages from Moderna and Pfizer, as well as an injunction to stop them from selling their vaccines.

This is not the first time that Moderna and Pfizer have been sued over their COVID-19 vaccines. In 2021, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals filed a lawsuit against the two companies, alleging that their vaccines infringe its patents related to lipid nanoparticles (LNP). LNPs are used to deliver the mRNA in the vaccines into cells.

Alnylam's lawsuit is still pending. The company is seeking damages from Moderna and Pfizer, as well as an injunction to stop them from selling their vaccines.

The lawsuits against Moderna and Pfizer are a sign of the growing competition in the COVID-19 vaccine market. As more companies develop and market vaccines, it is likely that we will see more patent infringement lawsuits.
